Retford Grammar School 1961 Iolanthe party

Taken after a production of Iolanthe at the grammar school about 1961. Miss Townsend, our (Elizabethan?) headteacher, in the background. Stephen Sulley: l Lived across the road from Miss Townsend in Little Gringley

Janet Webb: Miss Newsom is on there and my husband tells me that it's Duncan McNeil serving the sausage rolls. Clive Webster on there as well. Peter Holdsworth: Janet Webb I think that you were the Fairy Queen and I met you at Carol's in Carlton in Lindrick about 10 years ago. I was in the chorus. I think that I see Steve Barton and Steve Tanner in the background and possibly Peter Thompson opposite Carol.

Nigel Banyard: Far left is Mr Bartlett/Bartley? Head of English at KEGS, sadly he had a stroke just as I started 6th form in 1968 and only had the benefit of about one term of his Chaucerian English. Peter Holdsworth: Howard Bartley. He was a lovely man and was the producer of Iolanthe. Al Littlewood: .. yes, that's "Bugs" Bartley. Likewise I had the benefit of his vast knowledge for just a short time. He also taught my father.

Nigel Banyard: I recall seeing several sets of artwork still on the walls of Jack Penrose's art room which I think were for posters or programmes for Iolanthe when I started in '63. Al Littlewood: Jack Penrose was in the same year as my father when they were pupils at the Grammar School. [webmaster 2023-07-16 13:17:10]

Steve Tanner: Peter, it wasn’t Janet Webb (then Bower) who was the Fairy Queen – it was Janet Whate. She’s the brunette sitting at the table to the left of the blond Carol Topham. . She (Janet) was referred to by Frank Chandler in his rather unkind review, when he suggested that more point should have been given to the line “I see no objection to stoutness, in moderation” by having Janet wear a stomach-cushion, presumably. Bart was quite angry about Frank’s rather supercilious review. I think the chap to the left of Peter Thompson , sitting opposite Carol, is Robin Lee. Howard Bartley looking down at Miss Townsend top left.. Miss Newsom next to Miss Townsend. David (aka Majuba) Hill eating what looks like a banana sitting at the table top right. The group of 4 standing top back right includes Paul West, identified by his ears, me (thanks Peter, I wouldn’t have recognised myself), then someone else, and then Steve Barton holding a glass. Possibly Johnnie Brooke top left of centre facing away, and David Waterfield(?) to his left. Janet Bower/Webb – I recall taking you punting on the Cam when you were at Homerton, around 1966? And giving your boyfriend/husband Geoff accommodation on my sofa several times when he visited you.... [STEVE TANNER 2024-11-15 05:54:10]
