LFirannkfort Shield (in glass case).

1905 the National Rifle Association decided to set up a schoolboys'  camp at the Bisley military camp in surrey with the aim of encouraging the

development of shooting skills. Several hundred schools were invited to attend the first camp held in 1906.  The Frankfort Shield was probably a memorial to 3rd Viscourit Frankfort de lfont J.Iorency, a noted shooting expert who died in 1902. Eisley had gained a reputation for having good marksmen for the Boer War and this may' explain the reference to Natal on the shieldJ

KING EDWARD VI GRAMMAR SCHOOL , RETFORD

The earliest known reference to a school in Retford is in the close rolls for 1393. An agreement was made later in 1518 between Thomas Gunthorpe, Rector of Babworth, and the Bailiffs and Burgesses of the town of East Retford, in which Gunthorpe made an endowment to the school. This bequest was designed to provide a school house. Money was also provided for an existing Chantry and Guild in the town, income from which was used to support the School Master and therefore the School.

The Chantries Act of 1545 allowed for the dispossessing of Colleges, Chantries, Guilds and Brotherhoods. After various considerations and inspections by the Chantry Commissioners, the Court of Augmentations ruled on 20 July 1548 that the only schools in Nottinghamshire to be granted Continuance Certificates were Nottingha m Grammar School and Southwell. The town was disappointed at the decision and sent a petition to the King, Edward

VI. This petition was successful and, on

9 December 1551, the fifth year of the reign of King Edward VI, a Free Grammar School was established in the town, to exist forever.

The first recorded headmaster was the Reverend Christopher Tay who presided over the school from 1563 until 1564. In 1819 the headmaster Reverend William Mould became concerned about the state of the school income as paid by the Bailiffs and Burgesses of the town. He initiated a Chancery suit in 1821; incensed by this move, the Bailiffs and Burgesses paid him no salary until 1831. During this time the Usher, James Holdernesse acted as headmaster.  The school lost much in its reputation. When the suit was settled in 1847 the school set about restoring its reputation and the succeeding headmasters served the school with both administrative and academic zeal.

In 1850 it was decided to build a new school to replace the earlier, dilapidated buildings and the first part of the new buildings, which still exist, was opened in 1857 . Over time additions to the buildings were made, including many extensions in the early twentieth century. During the twentieth century headmasters included Charles W Pilkington-Rogers (1926-1950) and his successor John CH Gover. In 1952 the school celebrated its 400th anniversary of the Edwardian foundation and hosted an event attended by HRH The Duke of Gloucester.

In 1979 the school merged with the Sir Frederick Milner School to form King Edward VI School, a comprehensive .

There are several histories of the school in fh collection, including one in the 400th Anniversary programme (S/BX 123/70/3/2/1) from which this has largely been drawn. AD Grounds' 'A History Of

King Edward VI Grammar School Retford' (Worksop, 1970) is available in Nottinghamshire Archives Reference Library .

The deposit comprises papers relating to the school in the twentieth century. It includes some administrative records, a wide variety of extra-curricular papers and records relating to the history of the school, including notes about and copies of documentation relating to pre-20th century events. Of particular note among the records is a series of weather

records , papers relating to the School's 400th Anniversary, and records of the Geographic and Scientific Society and the Theatre Club.
