Squash Courts being opened by Lady Goodwin in 1957

We were very lucky, between 1977 and 1984, that the school had it's own squash courts at all, freely open at lunch times, and also the evenings without charge.

In the 4th or 5th year, I had taken a beginners course at the new Retford Leisure Centre, and regular players were myself, David Patrick, Simon Layhe, John Marshall and Darren Spencer.

Without heating they were cold though, paint peeling even in the 1980s, and in the winter there was condensation running down the walls. I can remember playing more than once wearing a scarf!

The courts, along with the adjacent gymnasium, were demolished in about 2012 to make way for parking for the newly developed retirement village.
